Pontotoc, Texas was first settled in 1859 on the frontier of West Central Texas in what was, at the time, Comanche territory. It wasn’t Comanches but typhoid that plagued the town in the 1880s, creating a need for two cemeteries.

Once the 4th largest brewery in the US, construction on the complex began in 1865, and the brewery was sold due to financial and personal problems inside the Lemp family. Better known as the old red gym, the structure was designed in the Romanesque revival style resembling a red brick castle. It was originally used as a combination gymnasium and armory beginning in 1894. It may seem odd to combine a gym with an armory, but it was funded after the Chicago Haymarket Riot in a time of labor unrest, when cities were building militias to put down worker strikes and protests.
