The Merchants Building, Nashville (A0020389)

Black and white photograph of the Merchants Building on Broadway in Nashville. Originally constructed in the 1870s, the building was enlarged and renovated in the 1890s. It opened as a pharmacy and drug manufacturer (note the word "Drugs," still on the front of the building). Later it operated as a hotel, and hosted notable performers from the nearby Ryman Auditorium, including Hank Williams, Dolly Parton, and Patsy Cline. It also served as a speakeasy during prohibition, a honky tonk, and since the 1980s it has been a restaurant.
