Americans—myself included—have always had a love affair with the road. It seems to be ingrained in us, a restless spirit; a sense of adventure; manifest destiny; a place to get lost or to find ourselves. 

The road is more than a black ribbon of asphalt. It's a state of mind. It's the vehicle that informs the journey, in the biggest sense of that word. It's amber waves of grain, and purple mountains majesty. It's full of hope and dreams. It's new horizons and strange landscapes. It's tonic for loneliness, boredom, and hopelessness—even if only in our minds.

The road is romance for writers and moviemakers. The road is nostalgia. The road is escapism. The road is freedom.
